Better health care shouldn’t depend on where you live.
Unlike for many other chronic diseases, reimbursement of osteoporosis mediations is restricted in British Columbia. Other provinces in Canada reimburse medications to prevent osteoporotic fractures. Before patients break a bone. In BC, PharmaCare restricts access to clinically-proven osteoporosis medications until a documented fracture occurs, endangering the lives and livelihoods of patients, resulting in fractures, short- and long-term disability, even death. We believe BC PharmaCare should fund the use of medications proven to reduce fractures for all osteoporosis sufferers – before they break a bone, not after. Why should you care? Because 1 in 4 women and at least 1 in 8 men over 50 live with osteoporosis.
In B.C. it is estimated annual average hospital costs for all senior hip fracture hospitalization cases is over $75 million.[1]
